No fewer than thirteen individuals lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in Mexico.
A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” stated the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the year before. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in national projects. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
